variation from time to time. Your surgery will advise you of any changes.
If you feel you require an urgent/same day appointment you may be asked to give a brief outline of your problem to the Nurse in order that she may offer an appointment with the appropriate Health Care Professional. Occasionally if there are no free appointments at your chosen surgery, an appointment may be found for you at one of our other surgeries. We do not normally make appointments more than 2 weeks in advance. When booking appointments, it is worth remembering that our Practice Nurses are able to treat sore throats, earache, sinusitis, cystitis, as well as offering advice on contraception, HRT, vaginal discharge and blood pressure monitoring. It may be that your treatment requires you to take regular medication, and your Doctor has arranged for you to obtain prescriptions without seeing him/her. For repeat
prescriptions:
This section includes the following topics in alphabetical order. If you click on the headings immediately below, it will take you to the relevant section. 6.9 Influenza prevention clinic 6.10 Immunisation clinic for adults The Practice is able to offer acupuncture as a treatment for various conditions at Rawcliffe, Cornlands Road and Heworth Green surgeries. Please discuss with your Doctor the suitability of this treatment for your condition. Adults should ensure that they have had an initial course of three tetanus and polio immunisations. After this a booster may be needed after 10 years. The Practice Nurse will give advice and update these when necessary. Antenatal clinics are run with the help of the District Midwives. Most care is given at our surgeries although some examinations are carried out at the hospital. Patients are reviewed regularly by the Doctors and Nurses to ensure symptoms are kept under control and maximum benefit is obtained from medication. Our nurses have all been trained in asthma care and special times are set aside for these clinics. We believe that it is very important for women up to the age of 65 to have a cervical smear test every three years. If abnormal cells are detected early, treatment can be very simple without the need for an operation. Most of our smear tests are performed by the Practice Nurses and are often incorporated with a well woman health check. These are
run by the Doctors and Health Visitors at each surgery. Child development
is monitored as well as immunisations given. The Health Visitors are available
to give advice. Clinics are held regularly at each surgery to review diabetic patients. We hope to help prevent complications and assist with any problems. All the Doctors and Nurses are trained to give contraceptive advice. Appointments should be made through the Receptionist. We offer a full range of contraceptive care including pills, injections and the fitting of intra-uterine devices (the coil) and diaphragms (the cap). Emergency contraceptive advice is also available during surgery hours. 6.9 Influenza prevention clinic Influenza remains a serious illness for the elderly and those suffering from heart or chest disease or diabetes. Immunisation can be given against influenza and also pneumococcal pneumonia. Both these vaccines are available from early October in special clinics run by the Practice Nurses. Please ask the receptionist for details. Adults should ensure that they have had an initial course of three tetanus and polio immunisations. After this a booster may be needed after 10 years. The Practice Nurse will give advice and update these when necessary. 6.11
Minor surgery At the Lavender Grove Surgery, off Boroughbridge Road, we run a Travel Clinic. It is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. This service is provided not only for our patients but also for those who are not registered with the practice. Most vaccinations are available free of charge to our NHS patients, but there is a charge for some treatments and other items such as vaccination certificates. We stock a full range of health protection items such as sterile medical packs, mosquito nets and insect repellents. We recommend that you contact the Travel Clinic on York (01904) 784484 approximately 6 to 8 weeks before your journey in order to arrange an appointment to plan your immunisation schedule. If you are travelling at short notice we can arrange for a rapid immunisation schedule. We will consider which diseases can be prevented by vaccination, tablets or other measures and then make recommendations on the basis of the countries to be visited, season, length of stay, lifestyle and previous health of the traveller. The clinic is an approved centre for Yellow Fever Vaccinations and holds a full range of vaccines in stock. If you have any queries about the health risks of travel and their prevention please contact the Travel Clinic on York (01904) 784484. The clinics are usually held on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Please ask the Receptionist for further details of all our services.
7. HOW TO JOIN US AS A PATIENT Priory Medical Group is a long established group Practice in the City of York. The Practice operates from six different surgeries and has a full primary care team. We welcome new patients to the Practice. If you want to register as a patient, perhaps because you are new to York, just visit your nearest surgery. There is no need to make an appointment. It would help us complete the registration details if you bring a copy of your NHS Registration card (FP4) with you. All our surgeries are accessible to patients in wheelchairs.
If your condition/illness prevents you from attending a consultation at the surgery, you may request a home visit. As with urgent/same day appointments, please be prepared to give a brief summary of your problem so that the best possible service may be offered to you. Please request home visits before 10:00am. Please remember that home visits are only for severely ill or housebound patients.
Our District Nursing Team is supported by registered General Nurses and Care Assistants. The team works closely with Family Doctors, hospitals, social services and voluntary agencies to help meet people's health needs. Patients are often referred by their own Doctor or hospital but anyone can have access to district nursing services. The team offers skilled nursing care to people who are ill or those who are recovering from an illness. It also offers training and support to carers. The District Nurse will plan your care with you and your carer. This plan is left in your home and regularly updated to suit your health needs. Equipment
loans and assessment for any aids can be arranged.
Health Visitors are qualified Nurses with special training and experience in child health, health promotion and health education. They are supported by Care Assistants and are available to everyone regardless of age or sex. Each of the six surgeries has a named Health Visitor. Health Visitors are subject to a code of professional conduct requiring them to act at all times in your interest. Typical
