Family planning
All the Doctors and Nurses are trained to give contraceptive advice. Appointments should be made through the Receptionist. We offer a full range of contraceptive care including pills, injections and the fitting of intra-uterine devices (the coil) and diaphragms (the cap). Emergency contraceptive advice is also available during surgery hours.

Cervical smears
We believe that it is very important for women up to the age of 65 to have a cervical smear test every three years. If abnormal cells are detected early, treatment can be very simple without the need for an operation. Most of our smear tests are performed by the Practice Nurses and are often incorporated with a well woman health check.

Antenatal care
Antenatal clinics are run with the help of the District Midwives. Most care is given at our surgeries although some examinations are carried out at the hospital.

Asthma clinics
Patients are reviewed regularly by the Doctors and Nurses to ensure symptoms are kept under control and maximum benefit is obtained from medication. Our Nurses have all been trained in asthma care and special times are set aside for these clinics.

Diabetic clinics
Clinics are held regularly at each surgery to review diabetic patients. We hope to help prevent complications and assist with any problems.

Minor surgery
The Doctors and specially trained Nurses perform minor operations in special sessions for the removal of warts, verrucae, sebaceous cysts, skin tags and ingrowing toenails. Please see your doctor if you require this service.

Acupuncture
The Practice is able to offer acupuncture as a treatment for various conditions at Rawcliffe, Cornlands Road and Heworth Green surgeries. Please discuss with your Doctor the suitability of this treatment for your condition.

Children's clinics
These are run by the Doctors and Health Visitors at each surgery. Child development is monitored as well as immunisations given. The Health Visitors are available to give advice.
It is important that when these children attend for immunisations they are accompanied by an adult or written consent is given.

Adult immunisations
Adults should ensure that they have had an initial course of three tetanus and polio immunisations. After this a booster may be needed after 10 years. The Practice Nurse will give advice and update these when necessary.

Influenza prevention clinic
Influenza remains a serious illness for the elderly and those suffering from heart or chest disease or diabetes. Immunisation can be given against influenza and also pneumococcal pneumonia. Both these vaccines are available from early October in special clinics run by the Practice Nurses. Please ask the Receptionist for details.

Travel Clinic
At the Lavender Grove Surgery, off Boroughbridge Road, we run a Travel Clinic. It is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. This service is provided not only for our patients but also for those who are not registered with the practice.

Most vaccinations are available free of charge to our NHS patients, but there is a charge for some treatments and other items such as vaccination certificates.

We stock a full range of health protection items such as sterile medical packs, mosquito nets and insect repellents.

We recommend that you contact the Travel Clinic on York (01904) 784484 approximately 6 to 8 weeks before your journey in order to arrange an appointment to plan your immunisation schedule. If you are travelling at short notice we can arrange for a rapid immunisation schedule.

We will consider which diseases can be prevented by vaccination, tablets or other measures and then make recommendations on the basis of the countries to be visited, season, length of stay, lifestyle and previous health of the traveller.

The clinic is an approved centre for Yellow Fever vaccinations and holds a full range of vaccines in stock.

If you have any queries about the health risks of travel and their prevention please contact the Travel Clinic on 784484. The clinics are usually held on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

Please ask the Receptionist for further details of all our services.
